The Gut Reason You Can’t Lose Weight
There’s a very real reason why you’re having trouble losing weight. It’s not what you think, and really, it’s not entirely your fault.
I did a whole presentation on why your body struggles to lose weight and why you can’t keep it off (see below). So let me say:
Weight loss just is not just about burning more than you take in. Calories in does not equal calories out!
I know that’s what we’ve all been taught. I’m a registered dietitian, I’ve been taught this time and again that it’s the ultimate way to lose weight, the only way to lose weight, and the only thing that matters.
But it never worked…
I wanted to figure out what really worked, so I went further. I got an education in functional medicine, to learn how the body actually works. And I discovered that the calories in/calories out method was only one tiny aspect of a person’s weight.
I show you what you really need to do to lose real weight and keep it off in the presentation. It’s going to give you real information and real facts. From there, we can figure out precisely what will work for you.
But first, let’s take a look at what’s going on.
Current Weight Loss Strategies
There’s a lot out there on how to lose weight. And I’m sure you’ve heard these before:
- Reduce calories
- Reduce carbs
- Exercise more
- Eat smaller meals
- Eat more protein/fat
- Eat less protein/fat
They sound great, they’re easy, you can follow the numbers, and intellectually you can understand what’s going on. But, unfortunately, that’s not what your body needs. I wrote an article on the.
The Main Problem With Diets
All of these diets are deprivation. You’re taking in fewer calories than what you need and that sounds good because your body should use its natural stores to replace what you’re not eating. And you lose weight at first.
But you don’t lose weight from the right type of places. So, you do lose some fat, but it’s not the right type of fat. Did you know there are three types of fats in your body, and only one of them is weight-related?
Brown – Burns calories, protects your organs and produces heat for metabolism
White – Basically storage <- this is the target of weight loss
Beige – Mix of the two, mostly protective
We want to preserve the brown and beige fat because that’s what keeps us metabolically healthy. We want to get rid of the flabby, white fat.
What happens when you restrict calories
When you starve your body, the first thing that happens is your hormones realize you’re starving and your thyroid slows down your metabolism. You end up burning sugars, not fat. You keep the white fat!
If you cut down to 1200 calories per day, your metabolism will adjust to run off 1200 calories per day. Then, you stop losing weight.
But it can also lead to nutritional deficiencies and frustration. This type of diet makes your body produce the hormones that make you hungry (and fat), ghrelin and cortisol. You’ll start craving certain foods to meet your basic nutritional needs.
And this is the real reason why the calories in does not equal calories out. Your metabolism adjusts and you crave more food.
Set Point – Why You Plateau
But there’s another layer that goes into weight loss. A certain point when your body determines where you are your strongest, healthiest, and metabolically efficient. This is called the set point and is only determined by the healthy fat stores, not the abnormal fat stores. So what this means is if you have more unhealthy fat stores, that is ignored when a set point is determined. Overeating makes you gain weight. But if you don’t eat enough, your body will do what it can to maintain that set point. And even if you do lose weight, it will drive you to put the weight back on.
This is one of the topics I talked a lot about in the presentation because it’s a complex mix of hormones, body fat, and metabolic processes.
What Really Works
So, if you’re really looking to lose weight, you need to repair the damage to your body, plus balance your nutrition, exercise, and metabolism. Here are some of the things we take a look at:
- Gut Problems – reflux, indigestion, pain, irregular bowel movements
- Excess Visceral fat
- Sleep Issues – too much, insomnia, waking often
- Skin Conditions– psoriasis, cracking, red cheeks, dark circles under your eyes
- Food Sensitivities
- Mood Swings/Mental Health
Then, we rebuild your body:
- Restore gut health
- Reduce inflammation
- Improve muscle mass
- Increase energy, metabolism, and movement
- Detox!
